So tonight was my first real night out—and man, I know how to pick them, huh?
I started out by getting a beer with this guy named Eduard I had contacted off of CouchSurfing.com and he’s really cool. After introductions we went down “The Call”, this medieval Jewish center, to go to this free outdoor Moroccan music concert with some of his friends who were also really neat. Some of them were also “CouchSurfers” that I had already contacted so I was happy to see them there.
Then we went to Girona Cathedral’s plaza for dinner and kept an eye on the game playing outside of this food stand there. Of course when Spain won the Eurocup, you could hear a ton of screaming and fireworks. That was followed by this beautiful exodus of birds out of the cathedral’s main tower.
The people I was hanging out with weren’t like super crazy about it though cuz, duh, they’re Catalan. They were happy about Spain winning, but they weren’t about to spend the night partying about it because they don’t usually consider themselves Spanish.
As we drove home though, I saw plenty of people that did! We had some trouble getting back because so many streets were closed. Flags, horns and fireworks were going off everywhere. Actually I hear them going off right now.
The biggest victory for me tonight though is that I went out and met some local people to hang out with! I’m already going out later this week to meet one guy who said he’d like to do a regular language exchange with me. So yay! Hopefully this is the beginning of having a life outside of the house.
